Confused

Please read.

This is not a bash on Bruce Twitchel because i do understand its his job to inforce rules within the high school this blog is not directed at him in anyway….BUT i do not believe that i should be hindered from printing this picture off due to the fact that i am smoking. I am of course of age(18) and this picture was taken off school grounds.  I believe that it is ridiculous to hold back a student from publishing art because of its nature. In school the teachers tell us the reason we are here is to prepare us for the real world. Teachers teach us what we need to know to succeed in a job environment but they do not teach us about the harsh realities life comes with. I don’t need to give examples because I’m positive everyone who is reading this has something they are struggling with in their own lives and they understand what i mean. what im saying and trying to get to is why does the education system hide things that are so present in all of our lives. I started smoking because of peer pressure. That is topic that needs to be talked about more in school. This is just one example of what i mean. Smoking is terrible and I’m aware of this I’m not promoting it. Im just making art. I like how my picture turned out. Im proud of it.  Please comment with thoughts and opinions it would be appreciated.

  1. I get both what you and Twitchel is saying and I really like the picture. I think that he is right in a way because with these kind of pictures you are pressuring high school students into smoking in a way by them seeing how you can get really cool pictures with it.

  2. I can see where your coming from, but I also understand why the schools block this sort of stuff. I am almost wanting to take a neutral stand here just because of the topic. I myself do not think that smoking is the best thing, I’m heavily against it, but then again looking at this picture its not promoting smoking. There is no cigarette or cigar in the picture, for all we know you have dry ice in your mouth! I think with things such as this the school is protecting themselves from parents freaking out because some student printed a picture that they think promotes smoking, OK well then pull your child out of school for goodness sake, go look in the parking lot at lunch time, there’s plenty of people smoking. Also, you brought up your of age, its a decision we all make for ourselves, even if peer pressure was involved we still make our own decisions. We are told so much as we go through school that we should express ourselves and open our minds. This is just you purely expressing yourself, doing as you have been told, opening up. I may not agree with smoking, but I do agree that the school should not prevent you or anyone from FREE EXPRESSION.

  3. I would have to say that this is no big deal at all. You do not have a cigarette anywhere in the picture. You could have gotten the smoke from anywhere, fog or something but, I think that it is fine. You should be proud of this and you should be able to post it because it is very good. I, for one, would not look at this picture and say, “Oh. I’m going to start smoking now.” I disagree with smoking but I also disagree with not being able to post your art work. It is art and you should be able to post it.

  4. I would have to say that this is a great picture and I think that you prove a great point and I think it’s a great idea that if you don’t like the way things are being handled you’re willing to make a stand up against it. It’s like the way the world is right now… so many people say that if there’s an issue you have something against then you should make a stand and try to change it for the way that you think is best.
If this picture was taken off school grounds, and you are of age, then it was your choice to take the picture… whether it’s a “myspace picture” or for the strict purpose of art.
This picture is art, and I would agree that if you want to print this picture off… and you’re willing to pay the teacher, then you should have the right to print off the picture.

  5. Art shouldn’t have any boundaries . It represents the culture of today and helps grow tomorrow and express yesterday… no matter how much the school yells and screams that “no no no” the fact that students will smoke wont go away or stop so they should just explain the side effects however don’t try to hide our eyes from “school inappropriate material” they should allow it. There is nothing they can do to stop students so why should they take so much time stopping the unstoppable. You are expressing your life and showing somewhat truth in our culture today. You have contributed to society even if the school disagrees. Power to you!!!

  6. I really like the picture myself. I dont think it should be a problem with the school if you wanted to print it just because your smoking. It is your choice being 18, to smoke or not, and its your choice if you wanted to print it. I could understand if it was someone under age doing so. So I definatly agree with you 110%. There are alot of worse things that it could be a picture of. The schools try to prepare you for things to come, but they fail to bring up “reality” of things that are around you in every day life. (In some cases anyway.) Smoking is just a small fraction of things things. The school trys to stop people from publishing things like this because they think it is promoting it. But they dont want to see your trying to make art of it.

I dont know if this is the response you were looking for or not, but it made sense to me. If you get enough people that agree with you, Id take it to the school board.

  7. You know what… I agree with you on all fronts. Teachers do tell us that we are here to be prepared for the real world. They do not educate us in the hard facts of life though, they shelter us from them and therefore push us to them. Most teenagers rebel against authority. I think students should be more accurately educated in peer pressure and the things that you are pushed into because of it. I also think that it is ridiculous that CHS administration gives art students the right to publish nudity, but does not give us the right to take picture of smoke. On the other hand though, I do understand that they hide these things from us so that they do not offend parents or students. This is quite the controversial issue.

  8. I completely agree with you on this post. First off, great great picture. I think you did a really nice job on the editing, it’s not too much and not too little. Personally, I’m not too sure about the white ring around you. But, great writing at the bottom. Just because your smoking, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be able to print the picture. Your 18, your an adult.

  9. I completely agree with you. In my opinion if I saw this picture I wouldn’t conclude you were smoking a cigarette in the first place. The photo itself is so intense! I don’t think you shouldn’t be allowed to print this…it’s a beautiful picture and it makes me think.
    Good job emily!

  10. This is a really cool picture. I love how the smoke turned out. I read through the caption and I get what Twitch is saying, but since you are eighteen and it was off school grounds I don’t really think there should be a big problem. The picture is awesome though, the eyes are really intense–very nice.

  11. Emily i love you i agree 100% with you, this school isn’t real these teachers aren’t real, this school needs a wake up call by the students and i think this a good start emily more power to you

  12. I do like this picture. I like the way you took it and how you edited it. I think that they way you took it was creative and how it came out was creative. The only thing i’d say that could be different is the way the smoke is in your eyes. But that’s not something you can control haha so I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing about the photo. Of course I like your work woman, you’re good at what you do.

  13. I looove this picture. It reminds me of marilyn monroe sort of. Like the whole classy smoking thing. You’re good at taking portraits.

  14. I think this is an awesome picture. I like how the smoke turned out, nice job. And I also agree with you about the writing, your an adult so it’s all about you making the right and wrong decision. Nobody can stop you. You just gotta keep on keepin’ on ;)

  15. I really liked your photos, and how you made there eyes look. Very nice job, and you did a good job also with not making your photos look boring with the pictures just being of there faces.
